Bayern Munich also fell to a surprising defeat on the weekend, as the reigning German champions fell to their first league loss of the season, as they were on the receiving end of 5-1 thrashing against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Thomas Tuchel's side are now four points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the league, though Bayern do have a game in hand.
The six-time champions of Europe have already secured their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the 16th consecutive season, having won four and drawn one of their five matches in the group ahead of tonight's fixture.
The two sides met back on matchday one with Bayern Munich winning 4-3, but the German side were held to a 1-1 draw on their last trip to Old Trafford, in a Champions League last 16 first leg clash back in 2014.
