A FORMER X-Factor star has revealed publicly for the first time that he’s gay, saying he’s done with putting tough restraints on himself.
Carmello Munzone’s decision to come out arrives just days before the launch of his first cabaret show called “F@#! the Industry,” which follows his experiences and dealings with the Australian music industry.
“There is a lot about the music industry that puts pressure on - be like this, don’t be like that,” Munzone said.
The 25-year-old rose to fame with his rendition of Maroon 5’s Sunday Morning on the 2012 Australian series of The X-Factor eventually scoring a place in the top 10.
In an interview with SX Magazine he said: “I guess that is part of what the F*** the Industry show is about.
“It’s saying, take me as I am – this is me. I want to have an honest relationship with the industry and public.
“There was quite a long time that it felt stunting not to reveal it. I’d get to points in conversation where I would just stop talking.
“We had a couple of people in the show early on, who were gay and every time they were interviewed there was an automatic assumption that they were hetero. So rather than challenge that, I stayed silent. It was an omission really.”
Munzone has also revealed he lost 30 kilos before his first X-Factor audition and for the last two years has constantly tried to buff up for the industry.
“To do your career effectively, any career, you need to be who you are. And I wasn’t being me.
“Creatively, it was stifling,” he said.
“And now I feel, screw that—it’s time.”
Carmello’s show “F@#! the Industry” runs at the Civic Hotel in Sydney on December 16th, 23rd and 30th.
